Ingredients
Scale
- 1 block firm tofu
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for brushing)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup mirin
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- Chopped green onions (for garnish)
- Bonito flakes (for garnish, optional)
- Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Press the tofu to remove excess moisture by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing something heavy on top for about 15 minutes.
- Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes, approximately 1-inch each.
- In a shallow bowl, mix together the cornstarch, flour, salt, and pepper. Dredge each tofu cube in the flour mixture, coating it evenly on all sides.
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly brush the air fryer basket with vegetable oil or spray with non-stick cooking spray.
- Place the coated tofu cubes in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they’re not overcrowded. Air fry for 12-15 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through, until golden and crispy.
- While the tofu is cooking, prepare the sauce by combining soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Once the tofu is crispy, remove it from the air fryer and transfer it to a serving dish. Pour the sauce over the tofu, and garnish with chopped green onions, bonito flakes, and sesame seeds if desired.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your crispy, savory Air Fryer Agedashi Tofu!
Notes
- For a vegan version, you can substitute the mirin with maple syrup or a small amount of sugar.
- If you prefer extra crispy tofu, coat the tofu cubes with a bit more cornstarch or potato starch before air frying.
- This dish can be served as an appetizer or paired with steamed rice for a light meal.
- If you don’t have mirin, you can use a little extra sugar and water in its place, though it may alter the flavor slightly.
