Description

This comforting Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a hearty dish featuring layers of seasoned beef patties, creamy gravy, and tender potatoes. Easy to prepare and perfect for family dinners, this bake is sure to become a favorite in your home. With its rich flavors and satisfying textures, it’s a great way to enjoy a classic comfort food.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preparing the Patties: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until evenly distributed, then form the beef mixture into six patties. In a skillet over medium heat, brown each patty on both sides (they don’t need to be cooked all the way through). Set the patties aside.
  • Making the Gravy: In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and the flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of milk, whisking constantly until the gravy thickens. Season the gravy with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  • Assembling the Bake: Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom of the greased baking dish, followed by half of the sliced onions. Place the browned hamburger patties on top, then add the remaining potato and onion slices. Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the dish.
  • Baking and Serving: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 1 hour. This allows the potatoes to soften and the flavors to meld. After an hour, carefully remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider using beef broth instead of milk for the gravy.
  • This dish can be customized by adding vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for added nutrition.
