Description

Crispy, golden, and full of flavor, Amish Onion Fritters are a delicious snack or side dish. Made with sweet onions and a simple batter, these fritters are perfect for dipping in your favorite sauce or enjoying on their own. A classic comfort food with a savory twist!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk for extra flavor)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Peel and slice the onions thinly into rings or half-rings. Set aside.
  2. Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and sugar. Add the milk, egg, and thyme (if using) to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined. The batter should be thick but spreadable.
  3. Coat the Onions: Add the sliced onions to the batter and toss until they are evenly coated.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, pour about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking. To test, drop a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
  5. Fry the Fritters: Using a spoon, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter-coated onions into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and Serve: Once cooked, transfer the fritters to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley for garnish and serve immediately. Enjoy with a dipping sauce like ranch, ketchup, or spicy aioli!

Notes

  • For extra crispy fritters, use cold buttermilk for the batter.
  • If you prefer a spicier flavor, you can add cayenne pepper or chili powder to the batter.
  • These fritters are best served fresh but can be reheated in the oven for a few minutes to regain some crispness.
