This classic Amish dish features ground beef mixed with cracker crumbs and topped with creamy mushroom soup. It’s a hearty, comforting meal perfect for family dinners, served over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup cracker crumbs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (10.5 oz) can cream of mushroom soup

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, milk, cracker crumbs, salt, pepper, and chopped onion until well combined.
  • Form the beef mixture into a loaf shape and place it on a plate or baking dish. Cover and refrigerate overnight to set.
  • The next day, remove the beef loaf from the fridge and slice it into 1/2-inch thick slices or shape into patties.
  • Lightly dredge or roll the beef slices/patties in flour.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, pan-fry the beef slices until browned on both sides.
  • Transfer the browned beef slices to a baking dish.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and 1 soup can of water or broth until smooth.
  • Pour the mushroom soup gravy over the beef slices in the baking dish.
  • Bake at 350°F for 1 hour, or until the beef is hot and the sauce has thickened.
  • Serve the Poor Man’s Steak slices smothered in gravy over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
