Description

Amish Sugar Cookies are soft, buttery, and lightly sweetened cookies that are perfect for any occasion. With a tender texture and a delicate flavor, these classic cookies are sure to remind you of the warmth and simplicity of Amish kitchens. They’re quick and easy to make, and their sweetness makes them a favorite with both kids and adults.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

Step 2: Prepare the Dry Ingredients
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Set aside.

Step 3: Cream the Butter and Sugar
In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).

Step 4: Add Eggs and Vanilla
Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated.
    Stir in the vanilla extract.

Step 5: Combine Dry Ingredients and Milk
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

    Step 6: Shape the Cookies
Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls.
Roll each dough ball in the tablespoon of sugar to coat.

    Step 7: Bake
Place the sugar-coated dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Flatten each cookie slightly with the bottom of a glass or your fingers.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden, but the centers are still soft.

    Step 8: Cool and Serve
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Storage: These cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Variations: Add a sprinkle of colored sugar before baking to give them a festive touch. You can also substitute the vanilla extract for almond extract for a different flavor.
  • Texture: For softer cookies, be sure not to overbake them—remove them from the oven when the edges are just golden.
