Description

These soft and chewy Apple Butter Cookies are the perfect treat for fall. Infused with the rich flavor of apple butter and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, they offer a comforting, delicious bite. With a slight golden edge and a soft center, these cookies are perfect for enjoying with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup apple butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and promote even baking.
  • Cream the Butter and Sugars:
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This will take about 3 minutes using an electric mixer.
  • Add the Wet Ingredients:
Beat in the apple butter, egg, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well-combined.
  • Prepare the Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the dough, as this could result in dense cookies.
  • Shape the Dough:
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. The dough will spread slightly during baking, so leave space between each cookie.
  • Bake the Cookies:
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. The centers should remain soft.
  • Cool the Cookies:
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a more intense apple flavor, use homemade apple butter if you can.
  • To make smaller cookies, you can use a teaspoon to drop the dough, but reduce the baking time by 2 minutes.
  • If you prefer a chewier cookie, refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes before baking.
