Description

Apple French Toast is a delicious twist on the classic breakfast favorite. Tender, golden-brown slices of French toast are topped with a warm, cinnamon-spiced apple topping that’s caramelized to perfection. This comforting dish is perfect for a weekend brunch or a special breakfast treat, combining the flavors of sweet apples, cinnamon, and a fluffy custard-soaked bread.

Ingredients

Scale

For the French Toast:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 slices of thick bread (such as challah or brioche)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for cooking)

For the Apple Topping:

  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

For Garnish (optional):

  • Powdered sugar
  • Maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Prepare the egg mixture:

    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
  2. Prepare the apple topping:

    • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using).
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6-8 minutes until the apples soften and the sugar forms a caramelized sauce.
    • Add the lemon juice and cook for another 1-2 minutes, then remove from heat. If desired, stir in chopped walnuts or pecans for added crunch.
  3. Cook the French toast:

    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter.
    • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated.
    • Place the dipped bread slices on the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with all the slices of bread, adding more butter as needed.
  4. Assemble the dish:

    • Place the cooked French toast on plates and top each slice with a generous serving of the warm apple topping.
  5. Serve:

    • Optionally, dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup for extra sweetness. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use any type of apples you prefer. Tart apples like Granny Smith work well, but sweeter varieties like Fuji or Honeycrisp are great too.
  • For extra indulgence, serve with whipped cream or a dollop of mascarpone cheese on top.
  • If you have leftover apple topping, it can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated for use on other dishes like oatmeal or pancakes.
