Description

This Applesauce Cake is a warm, moist, and perfectly spiced dessert that’s easy to make and packed with flavor. It’s the perfect treat for any season and goes wonderfully with a cup of tea or coffee!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or raisins (optional, for texture)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or a loaf pan.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream the Butter and Sugar:
    • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  4. Add the Eggs:
    • Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  5. Combine with Applesauce:
    • Stir in the applesauce and vanilla extract until well mixed.
  6. Add Dry Ingredients:
    • Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  7. Fold in Optional Mix-ins:
    • If desired, fold in chopped walnuts or raisins for extra texture and flavor.
  8. Bake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • For an extra indulgent treat, you can top the cake with a cream cheese frosting or a glaze.
  • This cake keeps well and can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. It also freezes well for up to 3 months!
  • If you don’t have applesauce, you can substitute it with mashed bananas for a slightly different flavor.
