Description

This soft, pillowy, and flavorful garlic naan is the perfect accompaniment to any curry or Indian meal. Made with simple ingredients and cooked to perfection, it’s a true artisan bread experience!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (or ghee)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Make Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yogurt, olive oil (or ghee), and the yeast mixture. Stir to form a dough. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Let Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  4. Divide and Roll: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then roll out into an oval or teardrop shape about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Cook Naan: Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the rolled-out dough onto the hot pan and cook for about 2-3 minutes until bubbles start to form. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes on the other side.
  6. Add Garlic and Butter: Brush the hot naan with melted butter and sprinkle with minced garlic. Optional: sprinkle fresh cilantro on top for extra flavor.
  7. Serve: Serve warm with your favorite curry or dip. Enjoy the perfect garlic naan!

Notes

  • For a more traditional taste, substitute olive oil with ghee (clarified butter) in both the dough and for brushing.
  • If you don’t have a cast-iron skillet, you can use any heavy-bottomed pan, but cast iron provides the best results for a perfect char.
  • You can make the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours for even more flavor.
