Description
Crispy, golden, bite-sized onion petals seasoned and fried to perfection, these Awesome Blossom Onion Bites are a crowd-pleasing appetizer inspired by the iconic blooming onion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large sweet onions (like Vidalia)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Optional: ranch or blooming onion dipping sauce
Instructions
- Peel and cut onions into bite-sized petals. Separate layers and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.
- Pour buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture, coating well.
- Place coated onion bites on a baking sheet and let them rest for 10–15 minutes for the coating to adhere.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry onion bites in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per batch. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm with dipping sauce of choice.
Notes
- Sweet onions like Vidalia work best for mild, flavorful bites.
- For extra crunch, double dip: flour → buttermilk → flour again.
- Can be air-fried at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, sprayed with oil.
