Description

Crispy, golden, bite-sized onion petals seasoned and fried to perfection, these Awesome Blossom Onion Bites are a crowd-pleasing appetizer inspired by the iconic blooming onion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet onions (like Vidalia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Optional: ranch or blooming onion dipping sauce

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut onions into bite-sized petals. Separate layers and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne.
  3. Pour buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture, coating well.
  4. Place coated onion bites on a baking sheet and let them rest for 10–15 minutes for the coating to adhere.
  5. Heat oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry onion bites in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per batch. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm with dipping sauce of choice.

Notes

  • Sweet onions like Vidalia work best for mild, flavorful bites.
  • For extra crunch, double dip: flour → buttermilk → flour again.
  • Can be air-fried at 375°F for 8–10 minutes, sprayed with oil.
