Description

These Big, Fluffy Yeast Rolls are perfect for any occasion. Soft and airy with a golden, buttery crust, these rolls are an easy way to make any meal feel extra special. Whether served with soups, stews, or as a side at a holiday dinner, these rolls will quickly become a family favorite. Best of all, they’re easy to make with basic ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp salt

For Brushing:

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This ensures the yeast is active and ready to make the dough rise.

Step 2: Mix the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the frothy yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until the dough comes together into a rough ball.

Step 3: Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes on medium speed. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough is easy to handle.

Step 4: Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free spot for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 5: Shape the Rolls
Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12-15 equal portions and shape them into balls. Arrange the rolls on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet or in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, leaving some space between each roll.

Step 6: Second Rise
Cover the rolls loosely with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy and nearly doubled in size.

Step 7: Bake the Rolls
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Step 8: Brush with Butter
As soon as the rolls come out of the oven, brush them with melted butter for a glossy finish and extra flavor. Let the rolls cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
  • For a fluffier texture, allow the dough to rise in a warm environment, such as an oven with the light on.
  • These rolls are best enjoyed warm, but can be stored at room temperature for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
