Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup black cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, black cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pan for 15 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Black cocoa powder gives the cake its signature dark color and intense flavor — Dutch-processed cocoa powder can be used as a substitute but will be lighter.
