Description

This Blueberry Compote is a simple, sweet, and tangy topping made with fresh or frozen blueberries, perfect for drizzling over pancakes, waffles, yogurt, or desserts. The natural sweetness of the blueberries, combined with a touch of sugar and lemon, creates a deliciously vibrant sauce that can elevate any dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (adjust based on sweetness preference)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/4 cup water or orange juice

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thicker consistency)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ingredients:

    • If using fresh blueberries, rinse them thoroughly. If using frozen blueberries, there’s no need to thaw them beforehand.
    • In a medium saucepan, combine the blueberries, sugar, lemon juice, and water (or orange juice).
  2. Cook the blueberries:

    • Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the blueberries begin to break down and release their juices, about 5-7 minutes.
    • If you prefer a smoother compote, you can use a spoon or a potato masher to gently crush some of the blueberries as they cook.
  3. Thicken the compote (optional):

    • If you want a thicker consistency, dissolve the cornstarch in a tablespoon of water and stir it into the blueberry mixture. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until the compote thickens to your desired consistency.
  4. Add flavorings:

    • Once the compote reaches the desired thickness, stir in the lemon zest (if using) and vanilla extract (if desired) for extra flavor.
  5. Cool and serve:

    • Remove the compote from heat and let it cool slightly. The compote will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or chilled over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, yogurt, or enjoy it on its own!

Notes

  • You can adjust the sugar based on the sweetness of your blueberries. For a sweeter compote, add more sugar, and for a tarter one, reduce the amount.
  • If you prefer a smoother compote, you can blend it using an immersion blender after it cools slightly.

  • This compote can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
