Description

This Bobby Flay–inspired Salisbury steak features juicy, flavorful beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. A comfort food classic elevated with chef-style finesse—perfect with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Steak Patties:
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Gravy:
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz cremini or button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for umami)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, mustard, Worcestershire, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form into 4–6 oval patties.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil. Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked).
  4. In the same skillet, add butter and olive oil. Sauté onions and mushrooms for 6–8 minutes until caramelized.
  5. Stir in the flour and cook for 1–2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Bring to a simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  7. Return patties to skillet and spoon gravy over them. Cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes until steaks are cooked through.
  8. Garnish with parsley and serve hot with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.

Notes

  • Use ground chuck or sirloin for better flavor and texture.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of cream or a pat of butter to the gravy before serving.
