Description

This Bok Choy in Garlic Oyster Sauce is a quick, savory, and healthy side dish that’s perfect for any meal. The tender bok choy is lightly sautéed and coated in a flavorful garlic oyster sauce that elevates the dish with rich umami and aromatic garlic notes. This dish is easy to prepare and is the perfect addition to any Asian-inspired meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb bok choy (baby bok choy or regular bok choy)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or sesame oil for added flavor)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp cornstarch (optional, to thicken the sauce)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bok Choy:
Rinse the bok choy thoroughly to remove any dirt or sand. Cut the baby bok choy in half lengthwise, or chop regular bok choy into bite-sized pieces. Set aside.
  2. Make the Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix together the oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, and water. If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix the cornstarch with a bit of water to create a slurry, then add it to the sauce mixture. Set the sauce aside.
  3. Sauté the Garlic:
Heat the vegetable oil (or sesame oil for a more robust flavor) in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant and golden brown. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Cook the Bok Choy:
Add the bok choy to the skillet and stir-fry for about 2-3 minutes, until the bok choy is slightly tender but still crisp.
  5. Add the Sauce:
Pour the prepared oyster sauce mixture over the bok choy. Stir well to coat the bok choy evenly in the sauce. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes, until the bok choy is tender and the sauce has slightly thickened (if using cornstarch).
  6. Adjust Seasoning:
Taste the dish and adjust the seasoning by adding a pinch of salt or pepper if needed. If you want a more intense flavor, add a little more soy sauce or oyster sauce.
  7. Serve and Garnish:
Transfer the bok choy to a serving dish, and garnish with sesame seeds if desired. Serve immediately as a side dish with your favorite main course.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can drizzle a little sesame oil over the dish before serving.
  • If you prefer a little heat, add some red pepper flakes or sliced chili peppers to the garlic while sautéing.
  • You can also add other vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers to the dish for extra variety.
  • This dish pairs well with steamed rice or as a side to any Asian-inspired protein, such as grilled chicken, tofu, or fish.
