Description
A comforting Southern-style dish featuring seasoned hamburger steaks smothered in a rich brown onion gravy—perfect with mashed potatoes or rice.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Form into 4–6 oval patties.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook until onions are soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
- Sprinkle in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up browned bits from the pan. Simmer until thickened, about 3–4 minutes.
- Return hamburger steaks to the skillet and spoon gravy over the top. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef to reduce grease in the pan.
- Add mushrooms for a richer, more savory gravy.
- Great for meal prep—gravy thickens even more the next day.
