Description

A comforting casserole inspired by traditional cabbage rolls, layering seasoned ground beef, cabbage, rice, and tomato sauce for an easy, hearty meal.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 head green cabbage, chopped
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease a 9ร—13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion and garlic; cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in chopped cabbage and cook until slightly wilted, about 5 minutes.
  5. In a bowl, combine cooked rice, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  6. Layer half of the cabbage-beef mixture in the bottom of the baking dish.
  7. Spread the rice and tomato mixture evenly over the meat and cabbage layer.
  8. Top with remaining cabbage-beef mixture.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. If desired, remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheddar on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Use cauliflower rice for a low-carb variation.
  • Leftovers reheat well and taste even better the next day.
