Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt (to taste)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (optional, for brightness)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Onion and Garlic: In a large skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Add the Seasonings: Sprinkle in the Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to coat the onions and garlic with the spices.
  3. Make the Sauce: Pour in the heavy cream and chicken broth, stirring to combine. Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  4. Finish and Serve: If desired, add lemon juice for extra brightness and stir in fresh parsley for color. Adjust seasoning to taste with more salt or Cajun seasoning if needed. Serve the sauce over pasta, grilled chicken, or seafood.

Notes

  • If you want a spicier sauce, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or some chopped jalapeños.
  • This sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
  • For a dairy-free version, you can use coconut cream instead of heavy cream.
