For the dumplings:

  • 4 large apples, peeled, cored, and halved
  • 1 package (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

For the caramel sauce:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Place each apple half into a crescent roll dough triangle, rolling it up to enclose the apple completely. Arrange the dumplings in the prepared baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix together melted butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Brush the spiced butter over the tops of the dumplings.
  • In a saucepan, combine the butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, salt, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture comes to a simmer. Pour the caramel sauce over the dumplings.
  • Bake the dumplings in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.

Notes

  • You can use Granny Smith apples for a tart contrast to the sweet caramel sauce.
  • For a twist, add a sprinkle of chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) to the caramel sauce before pouring it over the dumplings.
