Description

This buttery, flaky tart topped with sweet, rich caramelized onions and creamy Gruyère cheese is the perfect showstopping side dish or appetizer for Thanksgiving

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed if frozen)
  • ½ cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • Fresh thyme (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Caramelize the Onions:
Heat the butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 20 minutes or until golden and caramelized. The key is to cook the onions slowly, allowing them to become sweet and tender.
  • Prepare the Puff Pastry:
Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Assemble the Tart:
Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges to allow the pastry to puff up during baking.
Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese evenly over the caramelized onions.
  • Bake the Tart:
Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed, and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Keep an eye on it toward the end to ensure the pastry doesn’t over-brown.
  • Garnish and Serve:
Remove the tart from the oven and garnish with fresh thyme leaves. Let it cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a drizzle of balsamic glaze or a pinch of sea salt before serving.
  • If you’re short on time, you can use pre-sliced onions, but the caramelizing process really brings out the sweetness of the onions.
  • You can use other cheeses such as feta, goat cheese, or Parmesan for different flavor variations.
  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, ensure the puff pastry is made without butter or use a dairy-free option for the cheese.
  • This tart can be made ahead of time and served at room temperature for a more relaxed dining experience.
