Description

Cheesy Gochujang & Spring Onion Swirls are a delightful fusion of savory cheese and the spicy, umami-packed flavor of gochujang, the famous Korean chili paste. Wrapped in soft dough with fresh spring onions, these swirls are perfect as a snack, appetizer, or party treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (or pizza dough if preferred)
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 2 tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • 23 spring onions, finely chopped
  • 1 egg (for egg wash, optional)
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Gochujang Sauce: In a small bowl, mix the gochujang, soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil until smooth and well combined.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: If using puff pastry, roll it out onto a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. If using pizza dough, roll it out to a similar thickness.
  4. Spread the Gochujang Sauce: Evenly spread the gochujang sauce over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Add the Cheese and Spring Onions: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella, grated cheddar, and finely chopped spring onions over the sauce. Make sure everything is evenly distributed.
  6. Form the Swirls: Carefully roll the dough into a tight log, starting from one edge. Once rolled, slice the log into 1-inch pieces to form swirls.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Arrange the swirls on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are spaced apart. Brush the tops with a lightly beaten egg (for a golden finish) and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if desired.
  8. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes, or until the swirls are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve: Allow the swirls to cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature!

Notes

  • If you prefer a milder version, use less gochujang and balance with a bit more honey for sweetness.
  • These swirls can also be made ahead of time. You can refrigerate the unbaked swirls and bake them just before serving.
  • For extra flavor, you can add a sprinkle of chili flakes or a drizzle of additional gochujang sauce after baking.
  • If you don’t have puff pastry, you can easily substitute with store-bought pizza dough or even crescent roll dough.
