Ingredients
-
1 sheet of puff pastry (store-bought or homemade, thawed if frozen)
-
1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
-
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
-
1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
-
2–3 fresh jalapeños, seeds removed and finely chopped (or 1/4 cup pickled jalapeños)
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
1/4 tsp onion powder
-
1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
-
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
-
Fresh cilantro or green onions for garnish (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Make the filling: In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, shredded cheddar, mozzarella, chopped jalapeños, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika (if using), and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy.
-
Prepare the puff pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Spread the cheese and jalapeño mixture evenly over the entire sheet of pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
-
Form the straws: Carefully fold the pastry in half, so the cheese mixture is enclosed. Press down gently to seal the edges. Cut the pastry into strips about 1/2 inch wide.
-
Twist the straws: Twist each strip a few times to create a spiral shape. Place the twisted straws on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Egg wash: Brush the top of each pastry straw with the beaten egg to give them a golden, shiny finish.
-
Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
-
Serve: Garnish with fresh cilantro or green onions, if desired. Serve warm with ranch dip, salsa, or sour cream.
Notes
-
You can substitute the jalapeños with other peppers (such as serrano or poblano) for a different flavor.
-
For an extra crispy finish, bake the straws on a wire rack placed on top of the baking sheet.
-
If you prefer a milder version, use fewer jalapeños or opt for pickled jalapeños which are milder.
