Description

Chili Cheese Toast is a quick, cheesy, and spicy snack made with toasted bread topped with a flavorful chili mix and melted cheese. It’s a popular snack or breakfast item that brings together the best of both worlds — a crispy base and gooey, cheesy topping with a kick of chili flavor. Ideal for parties, movie nights, or a quick meal!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices of bread (white, whole wheat, or any choice of your preference)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped bell pepper
  • 12 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 cup canned tomato, finely chopped (or fresh tomatoes)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce (adjust for spice level)
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1/4 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro leaves, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) or prepare your toaster oven.
  2. Heat a pan over medium heat and add a little butter. Once the butter melts, add the chopped onions, bell peppers, and green chilies. Sauté for about 2 minutes until they soften.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the tomatoes to soften and release their juices.
  4. Stir in the ketchup, chili sauce, oregano, chili flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Cook the mixture for another 3-4 minutes until it thickens slightly. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  5. While the chili mixture is cooking, lightly butter both sides of the bread slices and toast them in the oven or on a griddle until they are golden and crispy.
  6. Once the toast is ready, spoon the chili mixture generously over each slice of toasted bread. Spread it evenly to cover the surface.
  7. Top each slice with a mix of grated mozzarella and cheddar cheese. You can add more cheese for extra gooeyness if you like.
  8. Place the prepared toast on a baking tray and bake for 5-7 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. For extra crispiness, you can broil the toast for the last 1-2 minutes, keeping a close eye on it to avoid burning.
  9. Remove from the oven and garnish with chopped cilantro, if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your Chili Cheese Toast!

Notes

  • For a non-spicy version, skip the green chilies and chili sauce. You can replace them with some mild tomato sauce.
  • Feel free to add other toppings like mushrooms, olives, or jalapeños for extra flavor.
  • If you don’t have chili sauce, you can substitute with a bit of hot sauce or sriracha for that extra kick!
  • This dish works great as a snack, side dish, or light meal. You can also try using whole wheat or multigrain bread for a healthier option.
