Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Beef Filling:

    • 1 lb ground beef

    • 1 small onion, finely chopped

    • 2 cloves garlic, minced

    • 1 tablespoon chili powder

    • 1 teaspoon cumin

    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

    • 1/2 teaspoon oregano

    • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust based on your spice preference)

    • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes

    • 1/2 cup beef broth or water

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil

    For the Tacos:

    • 8 soft taco shells or hard taco shells

    • Toppings:

      • Shredded lettuce

      • Chopped tomatoes

      • Shredded cheese (cheddar, Mexican blend, or your choice)

      • Sour cream or Greek yogurt

      • Salsa or pico de gallo

      • Fresh cilantro (optional)

      • Jalapeño slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef:

    • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

    • Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened.

    • Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

    • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through (about 6-7 minutes). Drain any excess fat if necessary.

  2. Season the Beef:

    • Add the chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, oregano, and cayenne pepper to the beef mixture. Stir well to coat the meat with the spices.

    • Pour in the diced tomatoes and beef broth (or water). Stir and bring to a simmer.

    • Let the mixture cook for 10-12 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the liquid to reduce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  3. Warm the Taco Shells:

    • While the beef mixture is simmering, warm your taco shells according to the package instructions (either in the oven, on a skillet, or microwave).

  4. Assemble the Tacos:

    • Spoon the seasoned beef mixture into each taco shell.

    • Top with your desired toppings such as shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream, salsa, cilantro, and jalapeño slices.

  5. Serve:

    • Serve the Chilli Beef Tacos immediately with your favorite side dishes like rice, guacamole, or tortilla chips. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a more authentic flavor, you can use fresh tomatoes instead of canned diced tomatoes. Just chop them finely and simmer until they break down.

  • To make this dish spicier, increase the cayenne pepper or add some chopped fresh chili peppers.

  • If you’re short on time, you can use pre-cooked taco shells and skip the simmering step for a quicker version.

  • Feel free to experiment with different toppings like avocado slices, pickled onions, or hot sauce.
