Description
A savory and slightly spicy dish featuring tender strips of beef stir-fried with bell peppers, onions, and a flavorful sauce. This Chinese-inspired pepper steak is perfect over steamed rice for a satisfying meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil (optional, for extra flavor)
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix the thinly sliced flank steak with 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Let it marinate for about 15-20 minutes.
- In a wok or large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until the beef is browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the wok and set aside.
- In the same wok, add the sliced red and green bell peppers, onion, and garlic. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp.
- Add the grated ginger to the wok and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and water.
- Return the beef to the wok and pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything evenly.
- Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the beef and vegetables.
- If using, drizzle with sesame oil for added flavor before serving.
- Serve the Chinese pepper steak over steamed rice and enjoy!
Notes
- If you prefer a spicier dish, add sliced jalapeños or chili flakes to the stir-fry.
- You can substitute the flank steak with sirloin or rib-eye steak for a different texture.
- For a lighter version, you can use chicken or tofu instead of beef.
