Description

A savory and slightly spicy dish featuring tender strips of beef stir-fried with bell peppers, onions, and a flavorful sauce. This Chinese-inspired pepper steak is perfect over steamed rice for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the thinly sliced flank steak with 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 1 tablespoon cornstarch. Let it marinate for about 15-20 minutes.
  2. In a wok or large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until the beef is browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the wok and set aside.
  3. In the same wok, add the sliced red and green bell peppers, onion, and garlic. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp.
  4. Add the grated ginger to the wok and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and water.
  6. Return the beef to the wok and pour the sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables. Stir well to coat everything evenly.
  7. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the beef and vegetables.
  8. If using, drizzle with sesame oil for added flavor before serving.
  9. Serve the Chinese pepper steak over steamed rice and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you prefer a spicier dish, add sliced jalapeños or chili flakes to the stir-fry.
  • You can substitute the flank steak with sirloin or rib-eye steak for a different texture.
  • For a lighter version, you can use chicken or tofu instead of beef.
