Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F or 45°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (like Nutella)
- 1/4 cup chopped hazelnuts (optional, for added crunch)
- 1 tbsp butter, melted (for brushing)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg, and mix until a dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5–7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1–1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 12 inches by 8 inches (30×20 cm).
- Spread a generous layer of chocolate-hazelnut spread evenly over the dough, leaving a small border on all sides.
- If using, sprinkle the chopped hazelnuts evenly over the spread.
- Starting from one edge, tightly roll the dough into a log, sealing the edge to prevent the filling from leaking out.
- Slice the rolled dough into 8–10 even pieces and place them in a greased 9-inch round baking pan, or a similarly sized baking dish. Let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes, or until they’ve puffed up.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Once baked, remove the rolls from the oven and brush them with melted butter for extra shine. Allow them to cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar, if desired.
- Serve warm and enjoy your indulgent Chocolate Hazelnut Rolls!
Notes
- If you prefer, you can make the dough ahead of time and let it rise in the refrigerator overnight for a deeper flavor.
- For an extra decadent treat, you can drizzle more chocolate-hazelnut spread over the top after baking.
- You can use store-bought puff pastry if you’re short on time, but homemade dough gives the best texture.
- These rolls are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. You can also freeze the rolls before baking for up to a month and bake them straight from frozen.
