Description

Chocolate Hazelnut Rolls are soft, fluffy pastries filled with a creamy chocolate-hazelnut spread, then baked to golden perfection. These rolls are sweet, indulgent, and perfect for a cozy breakfast, afternoon tea, or as a special dessert treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F or 45°C)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (like Nutella)
  • 1/4 cup chopped hazelnuts (optional, for added crunch)
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted (for brushing)
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes, or until the yeast becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg, and mix until a dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5–7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise for 1–1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Roll the dough out into a rectangle about 12 inches by 8 inches (30×20 cm).
  6. Spread a generous layer of chocolate-hazelnut spread evenly over the dough, leaving a small border on all sides.
  7. If using, sprinkle the chopped hazelnuts evenly over the spread.
  8. Starting from one edge, tightly roll the dough into a log, sealing the edge to prevent the filling from leaking out.
  9. Slice the rolled dough into 8–10 even pieces and place them in a greased 9-inch round baking pan, or a similarly sized baking dish. Let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes, or until they’ve puffed up.
  10. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
  11. Once baked, remove the rolls from the oven and brush them with melted butter for extra shine. Allow them to cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar, if desired.
  12. Serve warm and enjoy your indulgent Chocolate Hazelnut Rolls!

Notes

  • If you prefer, you can make the dough ahead of time and let it rise in the refrigerator overnight for a deeper flavor.
  • For an extra decadent treat, you can drizzle more chocolate-hazelnut spread over the top after baking.
  • You can use store-bought puff pastry if you’re short on time, but homemade dough gives the best texture.
  • These rolls are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. You can also freeze the rolls before baking for up to a month and bake them straight from frozen.
