Description

These Chocolate Lava M&M Surprise Cookies are the ultimate indulgence, with gooey melted chocolate centers and colorful M&M’s hidden inside! The perfect treat for kids and chocolate lovers alike.

Ingredients

Scale

For the cookies:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup M&M’s (regular or mini)
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips (for the lava center)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Make the dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes). Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined. Then, fold in the cocoa powder and chocolate chips until evenly incorporated.
  5. Create the lava center: Take a small piece of cookie dough (about 1 tablespoon) and flatten it out in your hand. Place a few milk chocolate chips in the center and form the dough around it to seal. Roll the dough into a ball. Repeat with the remaining dough and chocolate chips.
  6. Add the M&Ms: Once the dough balls are formed, gently press a few M&M’s into the top of each dough ball to create a colorful, fun design.
  7. Bake the cookies: Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.
  8. Let them cool: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps to set the “lava” center.
  9. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • The melted chocolate “lava” center will be gooey, so let the cookies cool for a bit before biting into them.
  • For a fun twist, you can use different colored M&M’s or try peanut butter M&M’s for an added flavor.
  • If you prefer a more intense chocolate flavor, you can use dark chocolate chips instead of milk chocolate chips.
