Description

These Chocolate Lava M&M Surprise Cookies are a chocolate lover’s dream! With gooey, molten chocolate centers and colorful M&M’s hidden inside, each bite is an explosion of flavor. These soft and chewy cookies are perfect for any occasion, and the surprise filling will delight both kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup mini M&M’s
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 810 M&M’s for the surprise filling (per cookie)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until just combined. Stir in the mini M&M’s and chocolate chips.
  5. Form the Cookies: Scoop out 1-2 tablespoons of dough and flatten it slightly with your hands. Place 2-3 M&M’s in the center of the dough, then wrap the dough around the M&M’s to enclose them completely. Roll into a ball and place on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set, but the centers are still soft. The cookies will continue to cook slightly as they cool on the baking sheet.
  7. Cool and Serve: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. The chocolate centers will be gooey, so be careful when biting into them!

Notes

  • You can use any variety of M&M’s (peanut, peanut butter, etc.) for a twist on the traditional version.
  • Make sure not to overbake the cookies so they stay soft and the chocolate lava center remains gooey.
  • If you want to make ahead, freeze the dough balls and bake them fresh when you’re ready!
