Ingredients
Scale
-
For the Cake:
- 1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
-
For the Filling:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 (16 oz) powdered sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.
- Prepare the cake layer: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined. Spread this mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- Prepare the filling: In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add the powdered sugar, egg, and vanilla extract, and mix until smooth and creamy.
- Assemble the cake: Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the cake batter in the baking dish. Don’t mix it together, just spread it on top.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the edges are set and the top is slightly golden. The center should remain a little gooey (hence “ooey gooey”).
- Cool: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before cutting it into squares.
- Serve: Serve warm or at room temperature. You can dust with powdered sugar or add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
Notes
- For a richer flavor: Use a higher quality chocolate cake mix or make your own chocolate cake from scratch.
- Customize the filling: You can add chocolate chips to the cream cheese filling for extra chocolatey goodness.
- Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for up to 1 week. Reheat in the microwave for a few seconds before serving for that warm, gooey texture.
- Make ahead: This cake can be made the day before. Let it cool completely, then cover and store at room temperature. Reheat before serving.
