Description

This Chopped Italian Sandwich is a delicious, hearty sandwich filled with flavorful Italian meats, cheeses, and fresh veggies, all chopped and tossed together for an easy-to-eat, satisfying bite. The combination of salami, pepperoni, mozzarella, and tangy Italian dressing brings classic Italian deli flavors to life. Perfect for a quick lunch, picnic, or game day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 baguette or Italian hoagie roll (or 4 small sub rolls)
  • 1/4 lb salami, sliced
  • 1/4 lb pepperoni, sliced
  • 1/4 lb deli ham, sliced
  • 1/4 lb provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1/4 lb mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 1/4 cup red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup banana peppers or peperoncini, sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh romaine lettuce, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive tapenade or roasted red peppers (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons Italian dressing (store-bought or homemade)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sandwich Ingredients:
Slice the baguette or hoagie rolls in half lengthwise, leaving one side intact if you prefer a more traditional sub style. If using smaller rolls, slice each into individual sandwich-sized pieces. Set aside.

  2. Chop the Meats and Cheeses:
Chop the salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone, and mozzarella into small, bite-sized pieces. Combine all the chopped meats and cheeses in a large bowl.

  3. Add the Vegetables:
To the bowl with the meats and cheeses, add the chopped red onion, banana peppers, lettuce, and cherry tomatoes. Toss everything together until evenly mixed.

  4. Dress the Sandwich:
Drizzle the Italian dressing over the mixture and toss again to coat all the ingredients. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Assemble the Sandwich:
Spread the olive tapenade or roasted red peppers (if using) on the inside of the rolls. Then, spoon the chopped mixture of meats, cheeses, and veggies into the sandwich rolls. Drizzle with a bit of extra olive oil if desired for additional flavor.

  6. Serve:
Close the sandwich and serve immediately, or wrap tightly in parchment paper for a picnic or lunch on the go.

Notes

  • You can switch up the types of meats or cheeses based on personal preference. Some great alternatives include mortadella, capicola, or smoked turkey.
  • To add extra crunch, you can add some sliced cucumber or bell pepper.
  • For an even more flavorful sandwich, let the chopped mixture sit in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour to allow the dressing and flavors to meld together.

  • If you’re preparing these sandwiches for a group, you can assemble and wrap them in advance for an easy meal option.
