Description

These Christmas Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies are soft, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious! The buttery, cream cheese dough is enriched with a yellow cake mix and topped with festive sprinkles for the perfect holiday treat. These easy-to-make cookies are perfect for any Christmas cookie platter and are sure to be a crowd favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup holiday sprinkles (red and green, optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Make the Dough: In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  • Add the Cake Mix: Gradually add the yellow cake mix and mix until a thick, sticky dough forms.
  • Fold in the Sprinkles: If using, fold in the holiday sprinkles for a festive touch.
  • Shape the Cookies: Place powdered sugar in a small bowl. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough using a tablespoon or cookie scoop, then roll each dough ball in the powdered sugar to coat fully.
  • Bake the Cookies: Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops have a crinkle appearance. The cookies should still be soft in the center.
  • Cool and Serve: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • These cookies can be made with any flavor of cake mix for a fun twist (chocolate or red velvet are great options).
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • The holiday sprinkles are optional but add a nice festive touch.
  • Don’t overbake these cookies, as they should be soft and gooey in the center.
