Description

A classic Coney Island hot dog sauce, made with ground beef, spices, and a rich tomato-based sauce, perfect for topping hot dogs for an authentic Coney Island experience.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 2 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic and sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, beef broth, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, chili powder, paprika, cumin, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a little more beef broth or water to reach your desired consistency.
  6. Serve the sauce hot over cooked hot dogs and enjoy!

Notes

  • This sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for later use.
  • For a spicier sauce, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Serve the sauce on traditional Coney Island hot dogs with mustard, onions, and maybe a sprinkle of shredded cheese for an authentic experience.
