Ingredients
Scale
For the Chocolate Mousse:
- 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream, chilled
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (for whipped topping)
For Garnish (optional):
- Fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, or cherries)
- Shaved chocolate or chocolate curls
- Whipped cream
Instructions
- Melt the Chocolate:
- In a heatproof bowl, melt the chopped semi-sweet chocolate and butter together. You can use a double boiler or microwave in short bursts, stirring until smooth and fully melted. Let it cool slightly.
- Make the Whipped Cream:
- In a separate chilled bowl, whip 1 cup of heavy whipping cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Set aside.
- Prepare the Egg Yolks:
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolks until they become pale and slightly thickened.
- Combine the Mixtures:
- Gradually add a small amount of the melted chocolate to the egg yolks to temper them (to avoid scrambling). Once tempered, slowly whisk in the rest of the melted chocolate until fully combined.
- Gently fold in the whipped cream until the mousse mixture is smooth and fluffy.
- Chill the Mousse:
- Spoon the mousse into individual serving cups or glasses. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to set and chill.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Before serving, garnish the mousse with fresh berries, chocolate curls, or a dollop of whipped cream for extra flair.
Notes
- If you’re concerned about using raw eggs, you can use pasteurized eggs or egg substitutes.
- The mousse can be made up to 1 day ahead and kept in the refrigerator. Just cover it with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.
- For a richer flavor, you can substitute part of the semi-sweet chocolate with dark chocolate.
