Description

Juicy, seasoned hamburger steaks smothered in a rich caramelized onion and beef gravy—comfort food at its finest.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook on medium-low heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until onions are golden and caramelized.
  4. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  5. Slowly add beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, 3–5 minutes.
  6. Return hamburger steaks to skillet. Cover and simmer in the sauce for 10–12 minutes or until cooked through.
  7. Serve hot, spooning onions and gravy over the top.

Notes

  • Serve with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the sauce.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy while deglazing.
