Description
Juicy, seasoned hamburger steaks smothered in a rich caramelized onion and beef gravy—comfort food at its finest.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (for gravy)
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4 oval patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook on medium-low heat for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until onions are golden and caramelized.
- Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
- Slowly add beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, 3–5 minutes.
- Return hamburger steaks to skillet. Cover and simmer in the sauce for 10–12 minutes or until cooked through.
- Serve hot, spooning onions and gravy over the top.
Notes
- Serve with mashed potatoes or rice to soak up the sauce.
- Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
- For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy while deglazing.
