Description

A deliciously satisfying combination of juicy beef patties, melted cheese, and caramelized onions, all grilled between slices of buttery rye bread. Perfect for a comforting meal any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon sweet relish
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  • Prep the Bread: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Set aside.
  • Make the Patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef with black pepper, salt, and onion powder. Shape the mixture into 3 patties.
  • Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side, then reduce the heat to low and cook until fully done (internal temperature should reach 160°F).
  • Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet relish, and sugar. Mix well and set aside.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts: In another skillet on medium-low heat, place the buttered bread (butter-side down). Layer with 2 slices of cheddar cheese, a cooked patty, and 2 slices of provolone cheese. Spread the sauce on the unbuttered side of another slice of bread, then place it sauce-side down on top of the cheese.
  • Cook: Toast each side of the sandwich for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Repeat the process for all patty melts.
  • Serve and Enjoy!

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider caramelizing onions to layer in with the cheese and meat.
  • Feel free to adjust the cheese types to your preference.
