Description

A hearty dish featuring tender round steak simmered in rich onion gravy, perfect for serving over creamy mashed potatoes.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 to 6 slices of round steak (approximately 2 lbs)
  • 2 pouches onion gravy mix
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cups diced mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 tbsp butter, divided

Instructions

  • Instant Pot Method:
    • Sear the Steak: In a skillet, melt 1 tbsp of butter and sear both sides of each round steak slice for 2-3 minutes. Set aside.
    • Sauté in the Instant Pot: Set Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add 1 tbsp butter, then sauté onions, garlic, and mushrooms until mushrooms are golden and tender.
    • Add Ingredients: Place the seared steak slices into the Instant Pot. In a bowl, mix onion gravy pouches with 2 cups of hot water and stir to dissolve. Pour the gravy mixture over the steak and vegetables.
    • Cook: Set the Instant Pot to “Meat” or “High Pressure” for 20 minutes. Once done, release the steam and serve.
  • Crock Pot Method:
    • Prepare Ingredients: Follow the steps above to sear the steak and sauté the onions, garlic, and mushrooms.
    • Cook in Crock Pot: Place all ingredients into the slow cooker. Cook on low for 8 hours.
  • Oven Method:
    • Prepare Ingredients: Follow the same steps as above for searing the steak and sautéing the vegetables.
    • Bake: Place everything in a covered roasting pan and bake at 350°F for 2-2.5 hours, until the meat is fork-tender.

Notes

For a creamier gravy, add a can of cream of mushroom soup to the gravy mixture before cooking.
