Description

This Copycat Boxed Stuffing Mix From Scratch gives you the same convenience as the store-bought version, but with better flavor and quality! With simple ingredients like bread, onions, celery, and savory herbs, you can easily prepare homemade stuffing that will taste just like your favorite boxed mix. Perfect for Thanksgiving, holidays, or any meal that needs a tasty side dish!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups day-old bread, cubed (any kind of bread you prefer)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Spread the cubed bread on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake for 10–15 minutes, stirring halfway through, until the bread is lightly toasted. Set aside to cool.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, celery, and garlic. Sauté for 5–7 minutes, until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  4. Add the chicken or vegetable broth to the skillet, along with the dried thyme, sage, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir well to combine.
  5. Transfer the toasted bread cubes into a large bowl. Pour the broth mixture over the bread, stirring until the bread is evenly coated.
  6. If the mixture seems too dry, add a bit more broth, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency.
  7. Transfer the stuffing mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Sprinkle with fresh parsley (if using) and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can add cooked sausage, mushrooms, or cranberries to the stuffing for extra flavor and texture.
  • This recipe is easily customizable with different herbs like rosemary or marjoram, based on your preference.
  • If you prefer a fluffier stuffing, gently fluff it with a fork after baking. For a denser stuffing, press it down lightly before baking.
