Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup dry milk powder
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning
For Making Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons fat (butter, shortening, sausage fat, or bacon grease)
- 3 tablespoons of the gravy mix
- 1 cup water or milk (milk recommended for creamier gravy)
- Optional: browned sausage for sausage gravy
Instructions
- Make the Gravy Mix:
In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup dry milk powder, 1/4 cup cornstarch, 1 tablespoon ground black pepper, 1 tablespoon salt, 2 teaspoons onion powder, and 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning.
Store this mixture in an airtight container (like a mason jar) for up to 6 months. - Prepare the Gravy:
To make the gravy, melt 2 tablespoons of your chosen fat (butter, shortening, sausage fat, or bacon grease) in a saucepan over medium-low heat. - Make the Roux:
Add 3 tablespoons of the prepared gravy mix to the pan and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will form a roux. - Add Liquid:
Gradually add 1 cup of water or milk (milk will make a creamier gravy). Whisk continuously to prevent lumps. - Thicken the Gravy:
Continue to cook and whisk until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency, which usually takes about 3-5 minutes. - Optional Sausage Gravy:
If you want to make sausage gravy, add browned sausage to the gravy at this point and stir until well combined. - Serve and Enjoy:
Pour over mashed potatoes, biscuits, rice, or anything else your heart desires. Enjoy your homemade country gravy!
