Description
A comforting and hearty dish featuring tender chicken and fluffy dumplings simmered in a flavorful broth, perfect for family dinners and chilly nights.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 whole chicken (about 4 lbs)
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch of salt (for dumplings)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon salt (for seasoning the broth)
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Water, as needed
Instructions
- Place the whole chicken in a large pot and cover with water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low and simmer for about 1 hour. Remove the chicken, cool, remove skin and bones, and shred the chicken.
- In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Cut in 2 tablespoons of butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add 1 cup milk, stirring until a soft dough forms. Roll out to 1/4-inch thickness and cut into strips or squares.
- Bring the broth back to a gentle boil, add dumplings one at a time, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
- Return the shredded chicken to the pot, stir, and let simmer for another 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider incorporating herbs such as thyme or rosemary into the broth.
- Leftover chicken can be used for a quicker preparation.
