Ingredients

Scale

For the Bagels:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for sweetness)

For the Cream Cheese Filling:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, chopped (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

For the Garlic Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture, then stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Lightly oil a bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

  2. Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling:
In a medium bowl, mix the softened cream cheese with the minced garlic, chives (if using), garlic powder, and salt. Stir until smooth and well combined. Set aside.

  3. Shape the Bagels:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions.
Roll each portion into a ball and then use your finger to create a hole in the center, gently stretching the dough to form a bagel shape.
Fill the center hole of each bagel with a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture, sealing the dough around the filling to enclose it.

  4. Boil the Bagels:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of honey (optional, for sweetness).
Carefully drop the stuffed bagels into the boiling water, 2-3 at a time. Boil for about 1-2 minutes per side, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  5. Bake the Bagels:
Brush each bagel with the melted butter and garlic topping.
Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

  6. Serve & Enjoy:
Let the bagels cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, fresh out of the oven with extra cream cheese or your favorite spread.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, try adding a teaspoon of onion powder or fresh herbs (such as thyme or rosemary) to the cream cheese mixture.
  • You can freeze any leftover bagels for up to 1 month. Simply reheat in the oven for a few minutes before serving.
