- 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into chunks
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons garam masala
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Fresh cilantro for garnish
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, garam masala, cumin, turmeric, paprika, and salt. Add chicken pieces and toss to coat. Cover and marinate for at least 30 minutes (preferably overnight).
- In a large skillet or pan, heat butter and oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft and golden.
- Add garlic and ginger, and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add marinated chicken pieces and cook until browned on all sides (they don’t need to be fully cooked through yet).
- Stir in the tomato sauce and sugar. Simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Lower the heat and stir in the heavy cream. Simmer for another 5-7 minutes until the sauce is creamy and chicken is cooked through.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with naan or basmati rice.
Notes
- For extra flavor, grill or broil the marinated chicken before adding it to the sauce.
- You can substitute coconut milk for heavy cream for a dairy-free version.
- Adjust spice level by adding more paprika or a pinch of cayenne if desired.
