Ingredients
Scale
- 1 medium head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Creole seasoning
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
- 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1/2 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil for sautéing
- Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Carefully remove the leaves from the cabbage, cutting out the tough stem at the base. Blanch the leaves in the boiling water for 2-3 minutes until softened. Drain and set aside.
- In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Stir in the Creole seasoning, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Add the cooked rice and mix until well combined. Remove from heat.
- Place a few spoonfuls of the beef mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf. Roll up the leaves tightly, folding in the sides as you go to form a secure roll.
- In a large pot, combine the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down into the pot with the sauce. Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes, until the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded together.
- Garnish with freshly chopped parsley before serving. Serve with a side of crusty bread or rice for a complete meal!
Notes
- For a lighter version, you can use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
- If you prefer a spicier dish, add more cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the filling.
- These cabbage rolls can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or frozen for longer storage.
- Feel free to experiment with different herbs or add extra vegetables like bell peppers or carrots to the filling!
