Description

These Crispy Air Fryer Apple Fries are a healthier, yet equally delicious twist on the traditional French fry! With a golden, crispy exterior and a soft, sweet apple interior, these apple fries are perfect for dipping in caramel sauce or serving as a fun dessert or snack. They’re quick and easy to make, making them a great choice for kids and adults alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (or use almond flour for a gluten-free version)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for extra crispiness)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs (or panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted (optional for extra crispiness)
  • Caramel sauce for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apples:
    • Wash the apples thoroughly and remove the cores using an apple corer or a knife. Cut the apples into “fries” by slicing them into 1/2-inch thick wedges.
  2. Make the Coating:
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), sugar, and cornstarch.
    • In another shallow bowl, whisk the egg and vanilla extract together until combined.
    • In a third shallow bowl, place the breadcrumbs (or panko breadcrumbs).
  3. Coat the Apple Fries:
    • Dip each apple wedge into the flour mixture, coating it lightly and shaking off any excess.
    • Next, dip the coated apple wedge into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s well covered.
    • Finally, roll the apple wedge in the breadcrumbs until fully coated. For an extra crispy result, lightly drizzle the apple fries with melted butter before air frying.
  4. Preheat the Air Fryer:
    • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  5. Air Fry the Apple Fries:
    • Arrange the apple fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure they’re not overcrowded. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
    • Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping the apple fries halfway through the cooking time to ensure they cook evenly and become golden and crispy on all sides.
  6. Serve:
    • Once the apple fries are crispy and golden, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool slightly.
    • Serve with a drizzle of caramel sauce or a dusting of powdered sugar for an extra sweet touch.

Notes

  • You can use any type of apple you prefer, though firmer varieties like Fuji or Gala tend to hold up better during the air frying process.
  • If you want to make these even healthier, skip the sugar and butter, and enjoy the natural sweetness of the apples.
  • For a fun twist, try dipping these apple fries in chocolate sauce or yogurt.
  • If you prefer a softer texture, you can skip the breadcrumbs and just lightly coat the apples in the flour mixture and egg.
