Description

This Crispy Balsamic-Thyme Potato Torte is an elegant and savory dish perfect for impressing your guests. Layered with thinly sliced potatoes, fresh thyme, and a balsamic vinegar drizzle, the torte is baked until golden and crispy on the edges. The rich flavor of balsamic vinegar combined with the earthy thyme creates a unique and delicious twist on classic roasted potatoes. Ideal for a side dish at dinner parties or a cozy meal at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)
  • Fresh thyme sprigs for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or a tart pan with a little olive oil or cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the Potatoes:
Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick) using a mandoline or sharp knife. Set the slices aside.
  3. Make the Balsamic Mixture:
In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, fresh thyme leaves, salt, and pepper.
  4. Layer the Torte:
Arrange a layer of potato slices in the bottom of the prepared pan, overlapping the slices slightly. Drizzle a little of the balsamic mixture over the potatoes. Repeat layering the potato slices and drizzling the balsamic mixture, creating several layers until all the potatoes are used.
  5. Bake the Torte:
Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 40-45 minutes. After the initial baking time, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is crispy and golden brown.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
Once done, remove the torte from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh thyme sprigs for a beautiful finish. Serve warm as a side dish or appetizer.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can sprinkle some fresh herbs such as rosemary or parsley between the layers of potatoes.
  • Make sure the potato slices are as evenly sized as possible for even cooking.
  • This torte can be made ahead of time and reheated. It also holds its shape well, making it great for serving at parties.
