Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for garnish)
- Fresh thyme sprigs for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or a tart pan with a little olive oil or cooking spray. - Prepare the Potatoes:
Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick) using a mandoline or sharp knife. Set the slices aside. - Make the Balsamic Mixture:
In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, minced garlic, fresh thyme leaves, salt, and pepper. - Layer the Torte:
Arrange a layer of potato slices in the bottom of the prepared pan, overlapping the slices slightly. Drizzle a little of the balsamic mixture over the potatoes. Repeat layering the potato slices and drizzling the balsamic mixture, creating several layers until all the potatoes are used. - Bake the Torte:
Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 40-45 minutes. After the initial baking time, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is crispy and golden brown. - Garnish and Serve:
Once done, remove the torte from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh thyme sprigs for a beautiful finish. Serve warm as a side dish or appetizer.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can sprinkle some fresh herbs such as rosemary or parsley between the layers of potatoes.
- Make sure the potato slices are as evenly sized as possible for even cooking.
- This torte can be made ahead of time and reheated. It also holds its shape well, making it great for serving at parties.
