Description

This Crispy Fried Cod Sandwich is a mouthwatering, crunchy treat! Golden, crispy battered cod fillets are served in a soft sandwich bun, topped with tangy tartar sauce, crisp lettuce, and pickles. Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, this sandwich brings together the best of crispy fish and delicious toppings in every bite!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cod:

  • 4 cod fillets (about 46 oz each)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or whole milk)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (for extra crunch)
  • ½ cup cornmeal (optional, for extra texture)
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 sandwich buns (soft brioche buns or your favorite variety)
  • 4 tablespoons tartar sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 cup lettuce (shredded iceberg or romaine)
  • 812 pickle slices (dill or bread-and-butter pickles)
  • Lemon wedges (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cod:
Pat the cod fillets dry with paper towels. This helps the batter stick better and ensures a crispier texture.
In a shallow bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
In another bowl, whisk the egg and buttermilk together.
In a third shallow bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs and cornmeal (if using).

  2. Coat the Cod:
Dip each cod fillet into the flour mixture, coating it evenly. Then dip it into the buttermilk mixture, followed by the breadcrumb mixture. Press gently to ensure the breadcrumbs stick well.

  3. Heat the Oil:
In a large skillet, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small piece of bread into it—if it sizzles and browns quickly, it’s ready for frying.

  4. Fry the Cod:
Carefully lower the coated cod fillets into the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan—fry in batches if necessary.
Remove the fillets from the oil and drain them on a paper towel-lined plate.

  5. Assemble the Sandwich:
Toast the sandwich buns lightly in the same skillet or a separate pan, if desired.
Spread a tablespoon of tartar sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place the fried cod fillet on top, followed by a few pickle slices and a generous amount of shredded lettuce.
Top with the other half of the bun.

  6. Serve & Enjoy:
Serve the crispy fried cod sandwich immediately, with a side of fries or chips if desired. Garnish with a wedge of lemon for a refreshing squeeze of citrus on the fish.

Notes

  • For an added kick, you can drizzle hot sauce or add sliced jalapeños to the sandwich.
  • If you prefer a lighter coating, you can skip the panko breadcrumbs and cornmeal and use just flour for a more traditional batter.
  • You can make homemade tartar sauce by mixing mayonnaise, lemon juice, chopped pickles, and a dash of mustard or capers.
