Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large yellow onions
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt, plus extra for seasoning
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
- 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
- 1 cup regular breadcrumbs
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Optional: black pepper, paprika, or garlic powder for extra seasoning
Instructions
- Prepare Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into ¼-inch thick rings. Separate each ring and set aside.
- Prepare Breading Stations:
- In one bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a second bowl, whisk together egg and buttermilk.
- In a third bowl, mix Panko and regular breadcrumbs (add optional seasonings if desired).
- Coat Onion Rings: Dip each onion ring in the flour mixture, then into the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs, pressing to help the crumbs stick. Place coated rings on a plate.
- Heat Oil: In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry Onion Rings: Fry a few rings at a time (don’t overcrowd) for 2-3 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve: Season with extra salt if desired. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Adjust the seasoning to your taste by adding more spices to the breadcrumb mixture.
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent soggy rings.
