Description

These sweet and tangy caramelized onions are a versatile addition to your Thanksgiving spread. Slow-cooked to perfection, they bring a rich, deep flavor to meats, vegetables, or even leftover sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Onions:
Place the thinly sliced onions in the crockpot.
  • Make the Glaze:
In a small bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, melted butter, brown sugar, salt, and pepper.
  • Combine:
Pour the balsamic mixture over the onions in the crockpot and stir to coat evenly.
  • Cook:
Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours, stirring occasionally. The onions are done when they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized.
  • Serve:
Serve warm as a side dish, or use as a topping for turkey, roasted vegetables, or sandwiches.

Notes

  • Stir every couple of hours to ensure the onions caramelize evenly.
  • For a sweeter glaze, increase the brown sugar by an additional tablespoon.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Reheat gently before serving.
  • These onions can be used as a topping for meats like turkey or chicken, or served on top of roasted vegetables.
  • You can add fresh herbs such as thyme or rosemary to the crockpot for additional flavor.
