Description

This savory and slightly sweet stuffing is a Thanksgiving classic. Cooking it in a crockpot makes it easy and hands-off, while the combination of sausage and apples ensures a flavorful and hearty dish that complements your holiday meal perfectly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 apples, peeled and chopped
  • 8 cups cubed bread, toasted
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Cook the Sausage:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and cooked through. Once done, remove it from the skillet and set aside.
  • Sauté the Vegetables:
In the same skillet, sauté the chopped onion and celery until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Combine the Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked sausage, sautéed onion and celery, chopped apples, toasted bread cubes, chicken broth, melted butter, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is evenly coated.
  • Cook in the Crockpot:
Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 4–6 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  • Serve:
Once the stuffing is heated through and the flavors have melded, serve warm alongside your Thanksgiving feast.

Notes

  • If you prefer a vegetarian version, you can substitute the sausage with a plant-based option or more vegetables.
  • Feel free to add toasted nuts, like pecans or walnuts, for extra crunch and flavor.
  • This stuffing can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge. Reheat it in the crockpot or oven before serving.
  • Adjust the seasoning to your preference. Add more poultry seasoning, salt, or pepper as needed.
  • If you want a crispier stuffing, leave the lid off the crockpot during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
