Description

Crust Custard Pie is a silky smooth, creamy pie that’s perfect for any occasion. With a simple custard filling made from eggs, sugar, and milk, this classic dessert is both comforting and indulgent. The flakey, buttery crust pairs perfectly with the rich custard, creating a timeless treat loved by many!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pre-made pie crust (or homemade if preferred)
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the custard mixture: In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, nutmeg, and salt. Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to avoid curdling the eggs.
  3. Cook the custard: Pour the custard mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the custard thickens slightly (about 5-7 minutes). Be careful not to overcook it, as the custard may curdle.
  4. Fill the pie crust: Pour the prepared custard into the pre-baked pie crust.
  5. Bake the pie: Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. The top should be lightly golden.
  6. Cool: Let the pie cool completely on a wire rack. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the custard to set further.
  7. Serve: Slice and serve chilled. Optional: top with whipped cream or a dusting of ground nutmeg for extra flavor.

Notes

  • If you prefer a homemade crust, you can make your own pie dough with flour, butter, and a pinch of salt.
  • For a richer custard flavor, you can substitute part of the milk with heavy cream.
  • If you don’t have nutmeg, cinnamon is a great alternative for a warm spiced flavor.
  • You can also add a teaspoon of lemon zest or almond extract for a subtle twist.
