Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (dark or black cocoa preferred)
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 45 tbsp milk or heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat until smooth.
Slowly stir in boiling water—the batter will be thin, which is normal!

    2️⃣ Bake the Cake
    Divide batter evenly between pans.
Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

    3️⃣ Make the Frosting
    Beat butter until creamy.
Sift in powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
Add vanilla and 4 tbsp milk or heavy cream. Beat until smooth, adding extra milk if needed.

    4️⃣ Assemble & Decorate
Place one cake layer on a plate and spread a thick layer of frosting.
Add the second layer and frost the top and sides.
Garnish with chocolate shavings, edible glitter, or fresh berries for an elegant finish.

Notes

  • For an extra touch of flavor, you can add a splash of coffee to the cake batter to enhance the chocolate taste.
  • This cake is great when prepared a day ahead and stored in an airtight container.
